END HUNGER: WALK THE WORLD 2011: A Run and Walk towards Ending Hunger
Last night, (May 11, 2011) I attended a press event by World Food Programme (WFP) in line with the very exciting and upcoming event this May, the “End Hunger: Walk The World” for the year 2011, a global awareness campaign and fund raising event which shall occur in 24 time zones within 24 hours in 80 different countries. Present were Mr. Cyril Gonzales, CSR Manager, Philippine Pizza, Inc; Mr. Stephen Anderson, Country Director and Representative, United Nations World Food Programme – Philippines; Ms. Cecilia Casas, Country Human Resources Director TNT Express Worldwide Philippines, Inc. and Ms. Bajeng Cruz, Senior Brand Manager for Knorr, Unilever Philippines, Inc. The Blogger’s event was also attended by more than 30 bloggers and now-advocates to eradicate poverty and hunger. Isnt it nice!
Here in the Philippines, the fun walk and run (Walk the World Pilipinas) will be held on May 29, 2011 Sunday at the IMAX Parking lot, Mall of Asia. The event, which is set to be bigger than the previous years, is open to walkers and runners who are passionate about fighting hunger. In addition to the traditional 2-km walk, there will be a 5-km run for enthusiasts, both male and female, and a competitive 10-km group run. Proceeds from the event will support approximately 80,000 school children in the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur.

It costs WFP just 10 pesos to provide a nutritious meal to a child at school. School feeding programmes also give parents an extra incentive to keep their children in school, and help to lay a healthy foundation for a better future for the young.

WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries. During the event, everyone wrote a pledge on how can we help the organization and as well to answer on how we can contribute with its mission.
Since 2003, all proceeds from this event have been donated to WFP’s Global School Meals Programme, which provides nutritious food as an incentive to bring children to school and keep them there.In the Philippines, the event has been supporting more than 75,000 school children in 428 schools in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao.
Actor, Singer and TV Host KC Concepcion is one of WFP strongest allies. As National Ambassador, KC has gone to Mindanao to visit with the beneficiaries of the WFP school meals program, participated in walks here and in other countries and continues to spread the word about the fight to end hunger.
